Basic Lifeguarding Class - Red Cross Certified

October 13th - 15th

Cost:  $325

***Sign up today! This class will be posted to Red Cross Website on 9/15.  Class Max is 10***

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Sleepy Hollow Community Pool will offer to interested residents and Friends a Red Cross certified Basic Lifeguarding class in October.

We need new lifeguards every year and now seek some adults who might be available to guard occasionally at our pool, especially when school and other sports make many of our guards unavailable.

We also see benefit in having more people equipped with lifesaving and first aid skills, whether ever applied at our pool or not. Therefore, we will give priority to Sleepy Hollow residents and Friends of Sleepy Hollow before opening registration broadly with posting on the Red Cross Training website.

To facilitate this, Sleepy Hollow Homes Association has become a Licensed Training Provider (LTP) for the Red Cross and we have enrolled Briggitte Kroetz as our Licensed Red Cross Instructor (read bio here).

The class requires 6 to 7 hours of online pre-work followed by up to 20 hours at the pool and in class at the Community Center. Minimum age is 15.

Attached (here) is a course description provided by the Red Cross.

To qualify at the beginning of the in-pool class, each participant will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Swim continuously 300 yards (that is 12 lengths of our pool), to include 100 yards crawl wit breathing; 100 yards breaststroke with stroke, kick, and glide; and an additional 100 yards of either crawl or breast stroke and
  • Enter the pool from the side, swim 25 yards, dive to the bottom of the pool (8’) and retrieve a 10-lb block, swim with it back to the entry point, place the brick on the pool deck, and exit the pool without a ladder within 1 minute 40 seconds.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes.

Try it any time and be ready.

Dates/Times/Cost:

Register each participant separately - $325 each

Your fee covers the instructor, materials license and certificate fees to Red Cross, lifeguard materials include CPR mask and Life Guard Manual.

A minimum of 6 participants are required. If the class does not make, we will refund your payment.

Class maximum is 10 participants.

After you register and pay, we will enroll you with the Red Cross and you may begin the online portion of the course, estimated up to 7 hours.

Participate in class:

Friday October 13, 1:30pm – 6:30pm

Saturday October 14, 8:30am – 6:30pm

Sunday October 15, 8:30am – 6:30pm

Participants who complete the course and demonstrate appropriate skills and knowledge will be certified by the Red Cross in Lifeguarding. This 2 year certification is a requirement for employment at most swimming pools and a life skill you can use for the safety of your family and friends wherever you are.
