Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We are excited to offer an American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification course this October at the Sleepy Hollow Community Center and Pool. This course provides an invaluable opportunity to learn critical life - saving skills and become certified to serve as a lifeguard.

The instructor for this course will be Briggitte Kroetz, a Licensed American Red Cross Instructor. (Read bio here)

This course includes a blended learning format with 6 to 7 hours of online pre-work and up to 25 hours of in-person training. The online portion of the course must be completed prior to attending the in-person training on October 18. Once a minimum of 6 participants have registered, a link to the online coursework will be provided.

On the first day of the in-person training, participants will need to demonstrage the following skills in order to move forward in the class.

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest

  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on back or side is not permitted. Goggles are allowed)
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Goggles are NOT allowed).
  • Submerge to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using the ladder or steps.

The registration fee covers your instructor and certification costs. However, participants are required to have the following:
