Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We are excited to announce that the Sleepy Hollow Community Center and Pool will host an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Course this March! This is a fantastic opportunity to learn essential life-saving skills while earning a widely recognized certification that meets the requirements for most lifeguarding positions.
Course Highlights
- Instructor: The program will be led by Briggitte Kroetz, a Licensed American Red Cross Instructor.
- Blended Learning Format: The course includes 6-7 hours of online pre-work to be completed before in-person training begins. Once a minimum of 7 participants register, you’ll receive a link to the online coursework.
In-Person Training Dates & Schedule
- Saturday, March 22nd: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM
- Sunday, March 23rd: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM
- Monday, March 24th: 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Please bring lunch, snacks, a water bottle, sunscreen, a bathing suit, towel, and warm clothes.
Prerequisites for Participation
Skill Assessment (conducted on the first day of in-person training):

Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence:
- Jump into the water, submerge completely, and resurface.
- Swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (no back or side strokes; goggles allowed).
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.
- Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination.

Timed Event (within 1 minute, 40 seconds):
- Start in the water and swim 20 yards (goggles not allowed).
- Submerge to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Swim 20 yards back on your back, keeping the object at the surface with both hands and your face above water.
- Exit the water without using the ladder or steps.
Required Equipment
Participants will need the following items:
- Lifeguard Hip Pack
- Adult and Pediatric CPR Masks
- Lifeguard Whistle
These items can be purchased from the American Red Cross website, Amazon, and some other online websites. If you need help sourcing materials, feel free to reach out!
*Upon successful completion of the course and final assessments, participants will earn a 2-Year American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification.
